May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and there's no better time to prioritize your skin health than now. Here’s why it's important and why IT’S TIME to schedule your yearly skin exam.

Part of maintaining healthy skin is scheduling your yearly skin exam. This preventive visit allows for early detection of any potential concerns, when they’re most treatable.

You benefit from regular skin exams even if you practice safe sun habits, like seeking shade during prime sun hours, avoiding tanning beds, and diligently applying sunscreen daily.

At Twin Falls Dermatology & Aesthetics, LLC, we take your skin health seriously. Here’s why our provider, Laurel Krupski, recommends a yearly skin check and what you can expect during this appointment. Skin Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to schedule your checkup.

Why regular skin exams matter

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, but when detected early, it's also one of the most treatable. Regular skin exams play a critical role in early detection and treatment of skin cancer. During these exams, Laurel can identify suspicious moles, growths, or other abnormalities that may require further evaluation.

When skin cancer is caught in its earliest stages, treatment is less invasive and more likely to work. Early detection also means fewer complications.

What happens during a skin exam

For your yearly skin exam, Laurel asks you to change into a medical gown so she can do a thorough examination of your skin. She carefully examines your skin from head to toe, looking for any signs of skin cancer or other skin conditions.

A professional medical skin exam involves all areas – including those that you may have trouble seeing on your own, like the bottoms of your feet, your back, and your buttocks.

Laurel assesses moles, freckles, birthmarks, and other skin lesions, noting any changes in size, shape, color, or texture. If she finds any suspicious areas, she may recommend further testing, such as a biopsy, to determine if skin cancer is present.

Why Skin Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to schedule your exam

The month of May is a great time to prioritize your skin health and schedule your yearly skin exam. By booking your exam now, you can take proactive steps towards protecting your skin during the summer to prevent skin cancer.

During Skin Cancer Awareness Month, there’s heightened public awareness surrounding the risks and prevention of skin cancer. You can take advantage of educational events, seminars, and resources. These events provide valuable information about skin cancer prevention, early detection, and treatments, so you’re empowered to make informed decisions about your skin health.
